Implementation Outline
Phase I: Prep and Support (January 2022-June 2022)
Call to Action: Share my innovation proposal with all administration, teachers, and parents. Ask if they have any feedback or any idea of how to include SpEd students in learning activities outside of their original classroom
Create a staff meeting with all teachers and administration at my elementary school. Provide them with my innovation proposal, the reason behind it, and what the overall goal is.
Create a whole group meeting with all special education parents at my elementary school. Provide them with my innovation proposal the reason behind it and what the overall goal is.
Overall goal: To introduce SpEd students to a new way of learning. It doesn’t have to be the traditional face-to-face, but online as well.
Ask parents of SpEd students how they feel about their child utilizing technology in their learning. Follow up with any questions and concerns from parents
Send home letters to parents going over how their students will begin to use technology and learning on Chromebooks
Materials and Technology: Gather enough Chromebooks for my students and began to introduce them to technology.
Meet with the technology department at my school to set up Chromebooks for students and provide me with proper login information for each of them
Create lessons on the history of technology, its use, and its benefits. In the lesson make sure to include how to start up Chromebooks, how to log into Chromebooks, and how to properly close all apps and shut Chromebooks down.
Create activities with some of the online resources students can participate in as a class on the Smartboard to get them used to a touchscreen and different activities/resources.
Teacher and teacher assistant start to give each student their log-in information and model and teach how to log into Chromebooks.
Began teaching students how to navigate Google and search
Phase II: Planning and Utilizing Resources (July 2022-November 2022)
Surveys for Staff: Create and send out a survey to all staff at my school to see who will be willing and able to help participate in teaching SpEd students how to learn from technology
Are there any general education teachers willing to teach about learning from technology during Inclusive periods? Do any teachers want to participate in Inclusive periods?
Are there any general education teachers willing to locate resources that can help SpEd students when working online?
Are any of your general education students advanced at technology use and willing to work with a SpEd student on how to use Chromebooks?
Have SpEd students draw a picture of their favorite animal. After they draw their picture, teach students how to navigate through Google and have them search their favorite animals and jot down information about them (with the teacher and teacher assistant supervision).
Google knowledge
Create a lesson showing how there are other ways to search and get information other than a book/textbook
Meet with general education inclusion teachers in all grade levels. We all plan and discuss ways the general education teacher can implement a technology lesson and use it for all students
Develop a lesson plan for both SpEd and general students.
Survey for general education students on how advanced they are at using technology and who’s willing to pair up with a SpEd student
Pair SpEd students with a general ed. student and have them search and navigate Google on their Chromebooks together
Students can start using different resources and becoming familiar with them
Phase III: Implementing Blended Learning (December 2022- June 2023)
Have all general education inclusion teachers and SpEd teachers create lessons to upload online
Assign lessons to SpEd students and show them how to navigate them. Go over each lesson and what is expected
Have students work through the lesson and take mini-quizzes in between to show if they are grasping the information
Data tracking is important while piloting blended learning for SpEd students
Make sure to track how students are progressing using technology
Track if they are able to log in and out without assistance
Track if they are able to navigate lessons without assistance
Track if they are grasping the information from the mini-quizzes
Have inclusion teachers track how the one-on-one progress is going between the SpEd and general ed. student
Phase IV: Reflect and Expand (July 2023 – December 2023)
Having SpEd and general education students work together is not only great for their learning but also for social and play skills.
Create lessons where students can take turns, it can be a game or an activity
Meet with all staff including administration and discuss progress and/or setbacks
Meet with all SpEd parents and discuss the progress on students learning from technology
Parent engagement will be needed and for the next phase. I will discuss with them how I want to expand technology use not only for school but at their homes as well.
Ask parents how many are advanced at using technology
Survey parents on how engaged they can be if students bring home their Chromebooks for lessons
Expand on the issue that SpEd students are new to technology and this can benefit all students with disabilities in the future
Phase V: Chromebooks at home (January 2024 – June 2024)
Allow SpEd students to take their Chromebooks home and work on lessons for homework. Provide parents who do not have internet access at home with routers for Chromebooks to be able to access the internet.
Stress parent engagement to make sure the SpEd student is on task while at home
Upload one to two lessons a week for SpEd students to work on. Provide mini-quizzes and students have lessons done each Friday
Track and collect data on students’ progress
Compare students' progress to working on lessons at school compared to working on them at home.
Contact parents and ask for feedback
