Connecting the Dots

The difference between collecting and connecting the dots stood out to me. It is true that students nowadays only listen to memorize and not listen to learn. But of course teachers do not think that they are only memorizing when students receive high scores on tests. Teachers only teach what will be on major tests and exams, they do not teach children how to use those examples in real world situations and that is what Seth meant by “stop stealing dreams”. We are not having kids reach their full potential because they only worry about getting high grades instead of retaining the information to use it later. Using the 4 keys to building a conceptual framework can help get students on the right track. 1. First introducing the new unit instead of diving right in. 2. Creating a safe, supportive learning environment can help eliminate some of students' distractions, 3. Modeling/ showing examples can help create real world scenarios for students to use, and 4. Making sure you are not straying far from what you are teaching and staying on topic.
At first, I was considering myself as an independent learner. But through these discussion posts and since starting the ADL program, I do see myself as a dependent learner creating dependent learners. And I do not mean depending on other teachers or my principal to tell me what to do and where to go, or for them to tell me step by step instructions. But dependent on all the resources that are out there for us to use. There are thousands of books on PL, thousands of books on how you can communicate effectively and have a growth mindset etc. I am creating and building my students to utilize resources. Read the books that can help build your social skills, read the books that can teach you how to talk to your peers. Etc.
